Director, Revenue Recognition – Job Description

The Director of Revenue Recognition will lead the Revenue Recognition Center of Excellence as a technical accounting subject matter expert with respect to the company's revenue recognition generally accepted accounting policies. This position will have responsibility for managing the processes and internal controls associated with the technical and operational application of ASC 606 Revenue Recognition. This position requires a dynamic individual with the ability to partner with the sales organization and ensure the on premise and cloud license agreements are accounted for properly in accordance with ASC 606 while achieving the desired revenue recognition outcomes. This role is a key forward facing role in the organization.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the Global Revenue Recognition Center of Excellence to ensure compliance with ASC 606 Revenue from Contracts with Customers and other revenue recognition rules as they apply to the business. Ensure compliance with policies and procedures and identify opportunities to enhance existing procedures to improve measurement and control of revenue recognition.
  • Perform controls and procedures to review on premise and cloud license agreements to ensure they are accounted for properly. Be able to understand changes in business and regulatory environments to ensure compliance.
  • Find opportunities to simplify deal support by reducing the amount of complexity for the sales team.
  • Professionally interact with the company’s auditors during their quarterly reviews and the annual audit procedures.
  • Work with Sales, Legal and Contracting to ensure license agreements are structured in accordance with Ellucian's revenue recognition policies
  • Own controls and procedures related to the monthly close of software revenue accounts.
  • Own controls and procedures related to establishing and testing for Standalone Selling Price (“SSP”).
  • Keep current on the latest Revenue Recognition training content & programs. Provide training and guidance on revenue recognition to the business units to ensure compliance.
  • Consult with the business units and external auditors on revenue recognition technical accounting matters and the application and development of revenue recognition accounting policy.
  • Provide the required financial reporting disclosures.
  • Proactively identify/research updates to ASC 606 and related accounting standards and guidance (i.e. FASB, EITF, SEC and PCAOB guidance)
  • Provides leadership and direction to Revenue Recognition accounting staff by setting goals, objectives, performance criteria, and departmental standards.
  • Consistent exercise of independent judgment and discretion in matters of significance.
  • Manage direct reports and grow team as warranted. Attract, develop and retain capable and committed staff. Motivate and reinforce teamwork. Effectively supervise and evaluate staff.
  • Other ad-hoc duties and responsibilities as assigned.



  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA preferred.
  • Experience in the computer software/information technology industry is preferred.
  • 8-10 years of experience in accounting/finance; 6+ years of Big 4 external audit experience, 4 to 6 years of supervisory experience in the revenue recognition/financial reporting/general ledger area.


  • Advanced understanding of technology related Revenue Recognition guidance (ASC 606), with particular experience in Cloud/SaaS. Experience with transitions from on-premise software solutions to cloud-based is a plus.
  • Thorough US GAAP accounting and financial reporting knowledge, understanding of corporate financial processes, and demonstrated experience with implementing/enhancing internal controls.
  • Experience with SAP systems is preferred. 
  • Advanced proficiency with MS Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint).
  • Ability to identify, communicate & resolve accounting issues. Detail-oriented. Critical thinker.  Problem solver.
  • Demonstrated success supporting progressive organizational change and development. 
  • Significant experience completing projects requiring individual initiative, flexibility and tight timeframes with minimal supervision.

  • Articulate with excellent verbal and written communication skills. Capable of presenting complex financial information in an easy to understand format.
