As Systems Administrator for Technology Management at Ellucian you will be key contributor to planning, analysis, coordination, support and maintenance of our ERP systems Ellucian Banner and all components of the Unified Digital Campus (UDC) technologies.  This position’s primary focus is on day-to-day server operations, resolving customer issues for our RedHat Linux and limited AIX based environment.

 

Responsibilities include:

 

  • Installation, configuration, maintenance, and trouble-shooting Linux/UNIX systems.
  • Utilize VMware skills to setup manage and troubleshoot VMware installation.
  • Perform diagnostics, resolve problems, escalate problems to vendors as required, work with other group members, and take appropriate actions to assure appropriate and prompt solutions to system, application, and customer problems.
  • Develop and implement the backup and recovery methods for supported environments.
  • install, configure, maintain, document, troubleshoot and upgrade hardware, firmware, peripherals, operating systems, and applications as required.
  • Provide recommendations regarding hardware and software acquisition, prepare/maintain documentation (both operational and troubleshooting) on systems/services/applications.
  • Proactively monitor and optimize system performance using tuning & optimization methods.
  • Technical adviser to provide detailed planning information to project coordinators to assist in planning of service requests, implementation steps, corrective actions, upgrade recommendations and optimization steps for Linux and potentially AIX.
  • Scripts and/or automates common repeatable tasks across the spectrum of supported products and technologies.
  • All members of the team are expected to participate in our on-call process (24/7 production support). 
  •  Other duties may be assigned as needed. 

 

Required Experience, Knowledge & Skills: 

 

  • 5-7 years hands on experience with Linux and potentially AIX. Good VMware knowledge.
  • Expertise in Linux primarily and AIX system administration tasks and troubleshooting.
  • Familiar with kickstart and jumpstart process.
  • Intermediate to expert level systems administrator on VMware ESX servers.
  • Intermediate to expert knowledge of Linux/IBM AIX and intel based hardware troubleshooting skills
  • Intermediate to expert knowledge with the following: Storage Area Networks (SANs), Backup Solutions, and Networking Technologies consumed by Systems.
  • Experience building Linux primarily & AIX servers for Oracle databases.
  • Performance analysis and tuning on Linux primarily & AIX.
  • Configure DNS, Mail (SMTP, IMAP, POP), and FTP etc. services.
  • Good PERL and Shell scripts skills
  • Familiarity with open source tools, monitoring systems, hardware troubleshooting, tracking, resolution, and routine maintenance with security updates
  • Perform installations/patching of operating system, software installation
  • System backups and data recovery
  • Respond to monitoring alerts
  • Possess great people skills (must be able to interact with other technical groups), and must be able to work independently
  • A Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or related field is preferred. Equivalent work experience will be considered.  
  • Theory and operations of backup systems. This includes the entire backup/restoration process for all supported servers/services.
  • Working knowledge of TCP/IP networking and network topologies. Intermediate knowledge of systems monitoring, alerting, reporting and trending.
  • Long term trending of SLA, performance, and sizing metrics.
  • Identify and Resolve support tickets documented in ITIL Based Ticketing System
  • On-Call Support for Customers Assigned to Team

 

 

Desired Ellucian Product Experience:

 

  • Ellucian Banner ERP product: Banner 8 Administration & Banner 9/XE Administration
  • Single Sign-on Configuration/Support (SSO) including CAS and SAML2 protocols

  • Ability to work well in a team environment as well as individually.  
  • Systems Administrator certification for one or more: Unix/BSD/Linux. Microsoft certifications such as MCSE/MCITP.
  • Hardware certifications such as CompTIA’s A+ and Network+.
  • Security certifications such as a CISSP.
  • Setup and usage of network and systems monitoring and trending. 
  • Project management or team leadership
