Position Overview:

A Senior Cloud Engineer at Ellucian performs the delivery of contracted services and collaboratively engages in agile development to improve on processes and tools.  This hands-on keyboard work is based on established Information Technology Service Management (ITSM) standards, architecture standards, methods of procedures and troubleshooting standards.  Ellucian Cloud leverages the ITSM framework in executing our day to day work; including request fulfillment (or planned work), change management, incident management and problem management



  • Responsibility for delivery support and automation in such a way as to focus on contractual SLAs and internal SLOs; delivering high uptime for our customers  
  • Execute operational and maintenance activities in 24x7 Cloud environment by following release runbooks on a large number of systems
  • Cover assigned rotation as an on-call resource
  • Follow change management standards
  • Rapidly troubleshoot incidents:
    • By leveraging service restorative actions 
    • By understanding what causes most issues and the actions to mitigate those on your assigned technology stack
    • By understanding what actions will systematically eliminate the causes of common issues
    • Without doing more harm to currently impacted systems 
  • Report problems and participate in related root cause analysis or incident Post Mortems
    • Install, setup, and configure third party tools for collecting and analyzing database performance and stability issues.
    • Provide analysis of poor performance and instabilities identified in systems.
    • Participate in post mortem meeting and discussion; providing and documenting details from the incident or problem
    • Provide technical detail and assist with documenting agreed upon root cause
    • Provide technical detail and assist with documenting agreed upon preventative measures
    • Provide technical detail for diagnosing and fixing known bugs and problems. Assist with creating run books, automation or other process improvements to address future occurrences of issue and for automating common tasks; clearly document the steps to execute and resolve
  • Execute continuous service improvement activities, as assigned:
    • Design, document, develop, test, and deploy automation
    • Follow current DevOps best practices, and/or other development methodologies such as SDLC, Rapid, etc.
    • Execute system health monitoring and performance optimization by:
      • Collaborate across all Cloud support teams (Network, Platform, Database and Applications) on efforts to improve performance, stability, and availability
      • Analyze changes in each database version release, hot fix, service pack, or business requirements
      • Determine if changes require an updated to current documentation, processes, procedures and tools
      • Contribute to knowledge management by updating documentation, processes, procedures and tools.
      • Work with Cloud Talent Development to train colleagues on new documentation, processes, procedures and tools.
    • Document and escalate database related application issues with detailed analyses to the Product Development teams.
    • Design, document, develop, test, and deploy automation 
  • Act as a mentor for Cloud Engineer colleagues by: 
    • Providing adoption leadership expertise for new standards and best practices 
    • Participating as a subject matter expert on process improvement; and training & tool development 
    • Be the subject matter expert for assigned specializations by providing technical leadership and technical engineering expertise


  • Possesses the tenacity to delve to the root of the issue quickly, understand why it happened, and prevent it in the future
  • Proven experience collaborating with cross functional global and remote teams with diverse backgrounds
  • Proven experience with scrum development methodology
  • Experience writing process requirements, technical design documents, and standard operating procedures.
  • Strong verbal and written skills, excellent customer service, as well as high attention to detail
  • B.S (Computer Science/Engineering) and/or one of the following:
    • AWS certification(s)AWS Certified Developer, AWS Certified DevOps, AWS Certified SysOps or AWS Solutions Architect certification preferred


    • Equivalent OCI, Azure, or GCP certification
  • ITIL v3 or v4 Foundation  Certification
  • 3+ years of experience in multi-region, multi-tenant SaaS or PaaS environment
  • 3+ years of experience with AWS platform, preference for, but not limited to: AMI, EC2, EBS, ELB, IAM, KMS, RDS, S3, SNS, VPC, Route 53, CloudWatch, Lambda, provisioning systems, security groups, backups, restore, and disaster recovery
  • 3+ years of experience administering and troubleshooting Oracle database performance using AWR & ADDM reports and grid control
  • 3+ years of experience with enterprise scale Linux and/or Windows administration including AD and ADFS
  • 3+ years of experience in supporting, maintaining, and using Ellucian products such as Banner or Colleague
  • 3+ years of experience in developing and deploying automation, CLI and API scripting using multiple tools
    • Preferred: Ansible, Bash, Jenkins, Git, Python, Powershell and Terraform for a large production environment with 1,000+ servers
    • Equivalent experience accepted on: Puppet, Chef, Docker, Gradle, JavaScript, Packer, Perl, and PHP
  • 3+ years of experience in web-based application deployment and administration using Python, Apache, Tomcat, IIS, and Nginx.
  • 3+ years of experience in network administration including DNS, IPAM, VPN, SSL certificates, and firewalls
  • Proven experience with Network Vendors.  Preferred combination includes the following:
  • Network Hardware: Cisco routers and switches; Pulse/Juniper VPN appliance; Cisco Anyconnect VPN
  • Network Software: Fortinet virtual router and switches; Aviatrix SD-WAN; OPEN VPN virtual VPN appliance, OKTA MFA
  • DNS Management Software: TCP Wave
  • DNS Technology: AWS Route 53, and AWS DNS Resolver
  • SSL Cert Management: DigiCert
