Position Description for Senior Systems Administrator


The Senior Systems Administrator must be able to design and support complex infrastructure architectures. The Senior Systems Administrator is a hands-on position, administering, building, configuring, deploying, and supporting systems utilized across the College to ensure the stability and integrity of the College’s server environment. This role also participates in assigning the appropriate access levels to systems and protects the confidentiality and integrity of student, staff, and faculty information in compliance with organization policies and standards.

  • Document and maintain the current environment for operational and planning purposes.
  • Provide level III technical support for systems administration and complex software issues.
  • Plan, design and install infrastructure components and changes to ensure the stable operation of the organization’s IT assets.
  • Participate in all aspects of IT systems monitoring to identify potential issues and proactively recommend and apply corrective action.
  • Prioritize work responsibilities appropriately and completes tasks within deadlines under minimal supervision.
  • Inform management about problems or obstacles that may impact deliverables and makes recommendations to mitigate impact.
  • Provide 24x7 support for critical production systems and participate in an on-call rotation.
  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the college’s host computers by monitoring system performance, configuration, maintenance and repair. Ensure that records of system downtime and equipment inventory are properly maintained.
  • Develop new system and application implementation plans, custom scripts and testing procedures to ensure operational reliability. Train technical staff in how to use new software and hardware developed and/or acquired.
  • Assist with the evaluation, training, supervision of Technical/Operations staff May guide or provide work direction to technical staff, contract staff and/or student employees.
  • Perform troubleshooting as required. As such, lead problem-solving efforts often involving outside vendors and other support personnel and/or organizations.
  • Establish guidelines and methods for the installation and management of the host computer operating systems, disk arrays, and other components.
  • Ensure high availability and acceptable levels of performance of mission critical host server resources.
  • Develop procedures to maintain security and protect systems from unauthorized use, acts of nature and user abuse. Utilize other Ellucian resources.
  • Develop procedures, programs and documentation for backup and restoration of servers, databases, host operating systems and host-based applications.
  • Develop and coordinate project directions and schedules to maximize benefits and minimize impacts on the customer organizations. Provide leadership in planning and implementation of projects for computer operations and enterprise systems administration.
  • Develop tools, procedures, and training sessions for Operations, Client Support and Systems Development staff to assist with work.
  • Manage the data center design and computer host systems including hardware, software and equipment such as UPS (uninterrupted power system).  Provide direction and suggestions for Server Room facilities related equipment such as air-conditioning and fire protection system.
  • Stay current with technological developments in systems administration technology and recommend ways for the college to take advantage of new technology.
  • Analyze organization’s needs, conduct technical research, and implement appropriate solutions to meet needs and comply with department standards.
  • Implement and maintain advanced functions of Office 365 including data loss prevention (DLP), data security, SPAM and Phishing filtering, data governance and compliance.
  • Provide security compliance validation of Office 365.
  • Develop compliance and data loss prevention plans/reports for distribution to management based on Ellucian standards
  • Ensure a rapid response to patch management requirements by assessing risk, devising a plan, and executing plans to all servers, server components, and other devices.
  • Establish and validate full functionality of disaster recovery environment for critical business applications.
  • Work closely with technical teams to detect network faults and performance issues and proactively implement monitoring services and alerts to prevent future occurrences.
  • Maintain highly secure systems through proper configuration and system access monitoring.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation.
  • Oversite of third-party service providers, primarily related to IT infrastructure as well as IT service delivery (help desk).
  • Maintain tickets in the service desk system and update internal knowledgebase.
  • Escalate issues to external service providers, and participate in vendor management.
  • Turnkey oversight, monitoring and administration of enterprise security.
  • Oversight, configuration and administration of our ITSM and SM platforms (Solarwinds, etc.). Key functions include:
    • Help Desk/Service Request Management
    • Asset Management
    • Secure/monitored remote access for technical assistance.
    • Change Process Management
    • System imaging and configuration management
  • Responsible for oversight of all enterprise and premise infrastructure/systems including:
    • Server, desktop and network hardware
    • Advanced Windows Server implementations (all versions)
    • Advanced knowledge of DNS, DHCP, Active Directory and Group Policy
    • Virtual environment; Hyper-V and VMWare


  • Enterprise Networking including:
    • Advanced knowledge of firewall configuration and rulesets, monitoring and management
    • Layer 2-3 switching including VLANs, Radius and Port Security
    • LAN/WAN configuration including routing
    • VPN/SDWAN including both site-to-site and client-based
    • Enterprise WiFi (Cisco) and VOIP telephony
  • Fundamental understanding of DNS and other web services include FTP/SFTP, etc.
  • Turnkey support and administration of Office 365 and all related applications.
  • Mobility and Mobile Device Management (MDM).
  • Management and oversight of broadband, telephony and XfinityTV service providers.
  • Technical administration and oversight of digital signage platform.
  • Technical administration of IP-based camera systems.
  • Must be able to travel to off-campuses as required.
