The Technical Director is responsible for the operation and security of the College-wide network and operations, including data, voice and video.  Manage and supervision of network and telecommunications staff, and helpdesk operations. Oversees computer infrastructures, data and voice communications, computer security, local and wide area networks, and telephone systems.  The Director also works closely with the academic component to plan, recommend and support academic software management and academic network expansion, and is responsible for organization and implementing specialized academic hardware, software/network requirements utilized in classroom and student academic labs.


Job Responsibilities

•    Work directly with the CIO to maintain strategic direction of computer operations and focus on customer satisfaction.
•    Develops and carries out plans for network and security enhancements including patching and maintenance of

overall security of computer systems including wireless connectivity, firewalls, anti-virus and malware /phishing solutions, supervises collection of and analyzes network and security logs.  
•    Oversee day-to-day production issues, act as
escalation point to resolve urgent and/or complex client issues, and manage client expectations.
•    Provide overall operational direction and management in regards to the network, Microsoft Active Directory, CAS, Google Apps, Mobile Technologies, backup systems, virtual environments, portal systems and integration, telephony, and server support services to the institution.
•    Evaluate data security profile(s), remediation plans and policies and make recommendations for improvement.
•    Directly negotiates contracts with and coordinates activities for network related hardware, desktop computers, software, and telecommunications.
•    Provide leadership and employee management, including skill evaluation and remediation planning.
•    Adjusts hours of work, priorities, and staff assignments to ensure efficient operation, based on
work load. Reviews logs and reports to detect recurring slowdowns or errors. Consults with software and hardware vendors and other establishment workers to solve problems impeding computer applications or processing. Meets with users to determine quality of service and identify needs.
•    Work with staff to understand where professional development is needed, guide staff in setting up training plans on an ongoing basis.
•    Collaborate with the Applications Director and Web Services Team to plan and maintain maximum availability of the College’s ERP system.
•    Meet with subordinates and supervisors to discuss
progress of work, resolve problems and maintain that standards and quality of work are met.
•    Develop practices and procedures, based on industry best practices, necessary to carry out day-to-day technical operations to enhance business continuity at the client location.  
•    Direct and coordinate activities in the area of Disaster Prevention and Recovery.
•    Assist in developing high-level annual and/or multi-year tactical plans.
•    Provide input to college committees as required.
•    Oversee all phases of technology design and implementation in construction projects including but not limited to planning, attending regularly scheduled progress meetings, and directing onsite staff and/or contractors with the installation of all technology.
•    Provide project implementation oversight to maintain standards for quality and quantity of work are met.
•    Establish change management processes, as needed, for coordinating technology upgrade and maintenance activities with all business units.
•    Evaluate data security profile(s) and make recommendations for improvement.
•    Evaluate new software or hardware requests and make cost-effective recommendations based on industry standards, cost/benefit analysis, and compatibility with
existing environment, software, or hardware.
•    Adjust hours of work, priorities and staff assignments to maintain efficient operations based on workload.
•    Consult with software and hardware vendors and other personnel to solve problems impeding effective


Position Requirements:
•    Bachelor’s degree (B. A.) from a four-year college or university; or five to seven years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
•    Experience with Active Directory and Linux  
•    Experience with current and emerging security solutions and best practices
•    Strong understanding of Network/Telecom, Instructional and Audio/Visual and User Support Services.
•    Experience with Cisco, Extreme or other major players networking equipment; vendor certifications desirable
•    Experience with Firewalls
next gen security appliances and solutions (FortiGate or Cisco preferred)
•    Experience with VoIP and telephony systems
•    Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization may exist. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
•    Excellent Communication and presentation skills – written and oral.
•    Strong planning and organizational skills.  
•    Proficient decision-making and time management skills.
•    Strong leadership abilities with a collaborative approach to problem-solving, including
use of remote teams/staff.
•    Ability to participate
on non-technical committees and represent the status of technical projects in language that academic and administrative staff can easily understand.
•    Project management experience – complex implementations or upgrades involving coordination of multiple vendors or departments, with a project budget greater than $100,000. Able to take initiative and responsibility for projects; promote teamwork and collaboration between Client and Ellucian staff.
•    Maintains current knowledge in use and trends of technology in higher education.
•    Candidate must be innovative, creative, focused on the customer and follow-through with customer needs/requirements.  

Desired Skills/Knowledge/Experience:
•    Formal Project Management training and/or certification
•    Formal ITIL or other standards-based training and/or certification
•    Report Development – ability to pull statistics out of various monitoring tools and appliances and create high-level client-facing reports on system status
•    Experience in a leadership role that included: staff mentoring, directing staff professional development, conflict resolution, and hiring.
