Description of Job Duties:

The Ellucian Information Development team is looking for a Manager of Information Development. The Information Development team plays a vital role in ensuring that Ellucian products are clearly described in documentation that's accurate and useful. 


The Manager will be responsible for supporting the development and implementation of Ellucian’s content strategy in order to provide modern forms of user assistance for Ellucian products based on research, usability testing, and modern advances in technical communication.


The Manager drives the resourcing, production, and delivery of product documentation in accordance with Ellucian guidelines. The candidate will have full responsibility over documentation for multiple product lines and oversee both the content development work and technical aptitude of multiple technical writers. The Manager is expected to work with product development teams, internal stakeholder groups, and customers to continually improve usability and quality of our documentation.


The Manager is expected to execute to Ellucian’s content strategy. To do this, the Manager must be able to think critically and strategically, identify needs across product lines, identify gaps in products or processes, improve standards and quality, show initiative and good judgment in developing solutions, train writers or other stakeholders on solutions, successfully resolve issues, and communicate reliably to others in the organization. He/she must have demonstrated experience working with Cloud/SaaS technologies, XML/DITA, and Agile.


The successful candidate will:

  • Provide personnel management to members of the Information Development team.
  • Recommend and develop direction for modern forms of content, based on user and industry research and as appropriate for Ellucian product offerings.
  • Support use of structured authoring, use of XML and DITA or other elements of the strategic roadmap for content development. Transition and train the team on content initiatives, such as content management strategy and software.
  • Design and conduct user research and usability testing projects related to content.
  • Define and deploy the standards for content development and Ellucian content products.
  • Serve as leader for content creators to guide them into technologies and decisions that are best-of-breed for the business and promote content reuse, content consistency, and cost-effective translation.
  • Gather and research technical information, including engineering and development information, for use in documentation activities.
  • Review and gather feedback from clients and other stakeholders to create highly usable, robust information sets to support users.
  • Participate in documentation planning and strategy meetings to recommend options based on industry standards for information development.
  • Research the information needs of software development projects to determine the best approach and format for developing content and delivery methods.
  • Plan documentation deliverables for multiple projects, and coordinate the work of both writers and other contributors.
  • Partner with other Information Development Managers, Information Architect, and other leaders in R&D to deliver to content development and strategic goals.
  • Collaborate with other content development groups to promote a corporate content strategy, content reuse, and more efficient/faster globalization.


Required Skills/Knowledge/Experience:

  • Undergraduate degree in Technical Communication or equivalent, with at least 10 years of technical writing/management experience
  • Experience with content strategy, implementing corresponding tools and systems
  • Effective written (English language) and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated project and personnel management experience
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously
  • Experience developing documentation and online help for software applications
  • Ability to be part of a team and contribute to a team goal
  • Must have demonstrated expertise with XML/DITA and structured authoring methodology
  • Must demonstrate experience with an XML authoring tool, Oxygen Author or Editor preferred
  • Must demonstrate experience with topic-based authoring
  • Demonstrated ability to perform project management activities in an agile environment
  • Candidates will be required to submit recent examples of documentation they created
  • Applicants may also be expected to take skills tests to determine their aptitude
